YogaTherapyWhat is the difference between a yoga teacher and a yoga therapist?

Many students who come into a yoga teacher training believe that it is the first step into going on to become a yoga therapist.

That’s not true! Yoga therapy is a separate training process, while a yoga teacher is a specific skill set to teach a class. In this blog, I will differentiate the specific differences between the two.

A yoga teacher in actionWhat is a yoga teacher?

In a nutshell, a yoga teacher is a professional who is trained to lead yoga classes.  To instruct students in the practice of specific styles of yoga (e.g. restorative yoga, hatha yoga, etc). They’re generally responsible for designing, leading yoga classes and assuring a level of safety & respect in their classes.

To become a yoga teacher, one typically needs to complete a yoga teacher training program (i.e. a 200 hour approved by Yoga Alliance). This is a foundational program that includes theoretical and practical components. These programs vary in length and intensity; some have the basic 200 hours, while some require thousands of hours of in-depth training.

Overall, a yoga teacher works in settings such as: yoga studios, gyms and community centers.

What is a yoga therapist?

A yoga therapist is a healthcare professional who uses the principles and practices of yoga to form specific therapies to help individuals with specific health conditions or to improve their overall health.

Yoga therapists are typically trained for healthcare, physical therapy, occupational therapy and even as an adjunct to counseling training.

Yoga therapists work with individuals to develop personalized yoga programs. These programs are tailored to meet the specific needs and goals of each person.

Yoga therapists work in hospitals, clinics, and private practices, and work with individuals of all ages and fitness levels.

Yoga Teacher vs Yoga Therapist the difference

Overall, the main difference between a yoga teacher and a yoga therapist is the focus of their work.

A yoga teacher again is primarily focused on leading yoga classes and instructing students in the practice of yoga. While a yoga therapist is focused on using yoga as a form of therapy to address specific health concerns.
