Being A Yoga Teacher: The Good, The Bad And The Ugly

Being a yoga teacher is a very very  very rewarding job. Helping individuals through their practice, helping them find calm & comfort with their stress and helping them find meaning in their lives.

And there are so many other benefits to teaching yoga. But there is the good, there is the bad and there is an ugly part to being a teacher. In this blog, we will talk about The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of being a yoga teacher.

The Good

Expanding on what’s been said above, being a yoga teacher is mostly good: good for your soul and your heart.

Helping others is so good for you on an individual level  because it helps you to have a more genuine stance with the world, so you are better able to keep your head above the pretentious and superficiality of today’s modern world.

The Bad

The bad part of being a teacher is unfortunately the yoga industry is full of sycophantic and fake yoga teachers.  They might not be the majority, but they are there.

But this makes perfect sense; since  the first Yoga Studio in North America (in Los Angeles specifically) in the 1940 the focus has always been on the aesthetic benefits of yoga.

And this is still true to this day. The positive out of all this is that if you are a competent and genuine yoga teacher you will stand out – be popular – in the yoga industry.

The Ugly

There is a ugly underbelly to the yoga industry. Some yoga teachers are really dangerous, sexual predators and serious substance abuse issues. And  some are even criminals of serious violence.

So what do you do about the ugly? Like with any new environment you come into, having your senses aware of how people act will allow you to use your gut as a barometer to sniff out these sorts teachers.

Like the movie The Good, the Bad and the Ugly the yoga industry has many faces, predominantly the industry is good, but it’s a little bit of a bad superficiality to it and  in a very very very small segment of it is ugly.
