Some people idealize being a Yoga teacher. Being a yoga teacher trainer in Vancouver for years has been a honor. They think it’s all Matcha Latte’s and a chill work environment. Although being a Yoga Teacher is a beautiful and fulfilling experience, there are some struggles to the lifestyle. Let’s Talk about the Pros and Cons of being a Yoga Teacher.

We will start with the Pros: As a Yoga teacher you will be surrounded by people who love Yoga!

When you’re passionate about something there is nothing more fulfilling than being immersed in a community of like-minded people. You will get to spend part, or all of your day doing and sharing Yoga.

For anyone with a passion for Yoga and Teaching this can be one of the most rewarding aspects. To watch your students grow through their practice, and to be a part of their journey is intensely valuable.

There are of course the obvious benefits to doing Yoga daily; stronger and more flexible body, a calmer mind, deepening one’s connection to the universe and/or themselves.

As for the Cons: Pay is most often per class so earning a full time wage equivalent is hard to achieve when you are first starting out.

Secondly, many cities across Canada are over saturated with teachers, making finding consistent paying work at a studio very difficult.

Lots of people will want you to do Karma classes, and this is great to gain experience, but eventually you will need to be paid for you skills.

Lastly, you are in a leadership position. Although this may not sound like a Con at first, it can be a heavy weight to carry. You are going to be the example of the Yoga teachings you’ve chosen to share on any given day.

Some people will put you on a pedestal and have unrealistic expectations of you. You will be expected to work through your emotions regardless of if you’re in the middle of a class or not.

All of these things boil down to all the eyes being on you, and if you’re a very shy person this could be a hard pill to swallow.

In The End

Like any line of work being a Yoga teacher has many positive aspects, and a few less than ideal characteristics. However, it’s the love of Yoga – regardless if you live in Vancouver, Toronto or somewhwere else – that keeps teachers teaching and can help you through many things you may face on your journey!
