Post Covid: Getting A Yoga Teaching Position?

All across Canada – Vancouver, Victoria , Kamloops, Banff, Jasper, Calgary, Edmonton, Hamilton, Regina, Saskatoon,  Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Halifax, St Johns –  newly graduated yoga teachers from many different types of yoga teacher training programs are ready to teach and to find positions as full-time or part-time yoga teachers. So the question has to be asked – especially post Covid – how does one get a teaching job in a post Covid world.

So Many Teachers!

There has been a strong growth in the practice of yoga over the past decade. This has also been the same with those wanting and who have taken a yoga teacher training program. 

There can be no exaggeration that the number of yoga teachers to students is not equal.  There are way more teachers than students. So to stand as a yoga teacher, one needs to do the following:

Genuine and Competent

 I have been to too many yoga classes in my lifetime as a yoga master. And I will tell you that one of the biggest things that stands out as not ever wanting to go to a teacher’s class again is the fact that they are either fake and good at teaching or that they’re overly genuine but have no competence in teaching. 

So if you want to stand out, you need to be a genuine and competent as a yoga teacher.

Find A Niche

The easiest way to find a teach jobs is to find a style of yoga that you’re passionate about; with that a genuine desire to be competent will grow.  

That is the ideal way to find a niche. But the other aspect is that you also need to teach yoga that people want. And from my experience, over the next decade the demand for yoga classes will be with yoga therapy, kundalini yoga and restorative yoga classes. 

The world is seeking much more in yin style of yoga –  feminine yoga. As opposed to yang style – masculine yoga – yoga, which is hot and ashtanga yoga.

Sum Up

Like any job, you have to put the work into it to get the results you want. Yoga is unlike most other jobs in that what people gravitate mostly towards is very genuine and to a lesser extent the competency of teaching. 

Having those two skills and getting as many  teaching classes behind you, you will eventually rise above the oversaturated number of yoga teachers.
