Modern Take On What Is Yoga
As a yoga instructor certifying people to become yoga teachers in yoga teacher training programs, one of the things we focus on is helping each student to develop their own personal beliefs and feelings in and around what yoga is.
Yoga is not something that has a set meaning; it has many meanings which in the essence is why yoga is so powerful. It truly is a connection of the mind, body and spirit.
Love
For me, yoga is a practice where I can learn to love and accept myself as I am. It is a path to finding myself while I strengthen my mind and body.
It always gets me on the right track and present in the moment. Yoga is a place for me to let go of all of the pain I experience both mental and physically, the negative things I think and a place to let go of negativity. Yoga has thus many benefits.
Yoga is a safe place for me to be vulnerable, find clarity and heal. Yoga is a place for me to find balance in all areas of my life, a place to reconnect to myself, and a place to be happy and free.
Last fall, I was diagnosed with Bipolar 1 Disorder after I had been struggling with severe depression for many years.
Bipolar
Being Bipolar is a lot like having two sides of myself that are very extreme. I am always guessing which side will come out each day. This mental illness is so tiring and discouraging, it is easy for me to get stuck in a negative mood because of the symptoms I experience.
The first few months after the diagnosis, I felt so lost and depressed and I didn’t know what I was going to do next. I started journaling and so much pain and past traumas I had experienced would come flowing onto the pages, the journaling was helping but I knew I needed more.
I cut out the negative people in my life, especially the ones involved with my traumas. Making all of these changes in my life was not near as hard as I had expected it to be. The more I practiced yoga and meditation, the better I felt so I knew these things were starting to have an impact on my everyday life, I started to feel more open, positive and secure.
Mental Health
This really helped me with my battle with my mental health and even everyday issues. I stopped being abrasive and negative and began to have a more positive outlook on life.
Yoga makes me feel like I am a whole person, like I am connected to all of myself at once and in those moments, I find flashes of understanding myself and part of me knows I have been searching for this understanding my whole life.
Myself
By taking time for myself each day, even if it’s just a few minutes I can calm my mind and tune into myself. Yoga is slowly helping me to become a better person and I am so excited to continue to grow as a person while I grow my practice. Yoga is a constant in life.
I know that my practice is always waiting for me and that fact is so comforting because I know I can grab a slice of peace, love and connection every day. All I have to do is roll out my matt, breathe and listen to what my body needs.
