How To Prepare For A Yoga Teacher Training

Some people think this is really just a silly question. You just register for a yoga teacher training (ytt) and then just show up. But it would be a big waste of money to do just that. There are actually things you should do to prepare to be successful doing a ytt. Here are the top three things to do in our opinion.

YTT: Get Your Props Together

It’s not a silly thing to say, but some people who register for yoga teacher training don’t have any of the props and are not practicing yoga on a regular basis.

If this is you, get a yoga mat, a yoga block, a yoga strap, even get a yoga wheel. Get anything you think it’s going to help you to do yoga twice a day for up to a month. Because that’s how much you’ll be doing yoga in a yoga teacher training.

YTT: Get Back To Doing Yoga

Can’t say this enough, expanding on the above point, if you’re about to do  a yoga teacher training, you need to start doing yoga on a daily basis.

This isn’t just to get you back into the swing of things yoga wise. This is to help your body prepare itself for the massive amounts of yoga you will be doing in a ytt program.

This doesn’t mean you have to do yoga for 2 hours a day prior to doing a ytt. But you should be doing a minimum of 30 minutes of  yoga a day. And doing this at least a few weeks prior to starting your yoga teacher training.

It will push you into the minimal physical shape you need to be in to undertake the physical demands of doing the large majority of yoga as you will do in a ytt.

Make Time To Do Your YTT With Your Personal Life

I have been in many yoga  teacher trainings and it hardly surprises me anymore the amount of excuses students make for not being able to commit 100% to the yoga teacher training classes, which are all mandatory.

People seem to think that they just need to show up for a ytt. And where their personal life conflicts with any of the ytt that they’ll be excused.  No certified or reputable ytt program would or should allow this.

So having said all that you should be prepared to only do the yoga teacher training program and when you’re not in the program you  should be studying, sleeping, eating and doing everything related to the ytt.

Honestly if you can get your partner or  any child care for the duration of your ytt the better. In fact anything else you can put off on someone else for the duration of your yoga teacher training, the  more successful you will be!

Again, it surprises  people when I tell them that they should start preparing for their ytt  from the day they register.  But by doing the above three, it will assure the money you are spending is well spent and it will enhance your chances of  becoming a certified yoga teacher.
