eco friendly consumer with reversable shopping bagsRespect the Earth

The earth needs our help more than ever now. We’re seeing signs of it being in distress and the only thing to do is to try to change the way we treat it. So how can we become a  eco yogi.

As someone who lives in one of the most environmentally conscious places in Canada, Victoria, BC, and who practices yoga it’s important to acknowledge our connection with Mother Earth and ensure we are living and working with her not against her. We are not separate, we are all connected! So, becoming a more eco-conscious yogi is very important, and here are some tips on how you can do that!

Support Environmentally Conscious Businesses

When you are supporting businesses, whether it’s buying from them, talking about and sharing words about them, make sure you are informed. In Victoria, there alot of so called environmentally friendly businesses, but one needs to look closer to see which  ones are actually environmentally friendly and which ones  just say  they are environmentally friendly.

For example, when looking into doing yoga teacher training, also ask about the products that they use. Are they zero waste, do they consume a lot of plastic? Whomever you are giving your money to is supporting that business.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

From a young age we learn about the 3 r’s, but most of the time we only remember recycle. It’s important to recycle, but as a last resort. Look at how much you buy, and throw out. Where can you improve? It’s also important for the environment, and your pocket, to try to reuse things you have already.

Usually you can reuse anything you think you may want to throw out! May it be an art project or something to be used around the house, get creative and figure out how to reuse it! If you can’t reuse it then recycling is your option!

If you remember to use the 3 r’s see how much waste you cut down on in a short period of time!

Buy Green Products

Products that are made from trees that grow back quickly, such as bamboo, hemp, and other biodegradable materials are becoming more and more accessible. Many of these products can be found in yoga studios and health food stores.

Businesses are seeing that there is a demand for green and eco-friendly products made with sustainable materials and they’re fulfilling that need. Support those businesses, not the ones stuck in the past making tons of new products with unsustainable and wasteful materials that take 20 years to decompose!

Whatever part of the path you’re on isn’t important, the fact that you’re taking a step in the right direction is. Go out into nature, feel the grass between your toes, reconnect with the earth and remind yourself that this is natural. This is what gives us life, and keeps us alive. We need to continue to work together to keep it alive too.
