Finding Our Genuine Yoga Teaching Voice

In many yoga teacher training (ytt) across Canada in Vancouver, Victoria , Kamloops, Banff, Jasper, Calgary, Edmonton, Hamilton, Regina, SaskatoonWinnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Halifax, St Johns one thing not taught is: A teacher’s voice.

At the end of the day, to become a competent and effective yoga teacher you have to find this voice or you will not stand out with all the other yoga teachers in the current over-saturated  yoga teaching market.

So how  do you find your teaching voice?

Develop Your Voice

Teaching yoga is really the only way to develop one’s own authentic teaching voice. The more classes you teach, the more you’ll develop this voice.

This is not that you develop what works like a business; you develop what works for you as a teacher.

You discover how to take your values that you obtained from practicing yoga personally and you start to find ways to convey these values an in effective and genuine way as a yoga teacher.

Journaling

Adding to the above, after each class, you should journal. This can be an online journal on a Google document or just a paper journal.   Either way, doing this helps you to figure out what works well at improving a class. It also allows you to incorporate students feedback.

Journaling also helps you figure out how you said things in class and this helps you to narrow down your values (mentioned above).

In The End

In summary, to stand out as a yoga teacher you have to develop your own genuine teaching voice.  This can only be done through teaching many classes.

And then reflecting on what works and what your values are from each of them.
